Three questions to the project team

What was the particular challenge of the project from a UX point of view?
Two challenges made this project especially demanding. First, the stakeholder landscape was unusually complex, spanning many departments, multiple external providers, and competing priorities and political goals that had to be reconciled into a unique product vision. Second, the healthcare ecosystem itself is layered: legacy infrastructure sits alongside modern technology, and the intricacy of the BARMER tech stack had to be navigated without slowing us down. Balancing that complexity with our need for speed was the central UX tension throughout.

What was your personal highlight in the development process? Was there an aha!-moment, was there a low point?
The highlight was clear: seeing the first membership application come in. After months of work, that moment made everything tangible and rewarding. The low points were the unexpected hurdles along the way — particularly compliance requirements that surfaced late in the process. Each one forced us to adapt quickly, and while those moments were frustrating, they ultimately sharpened the product (and the team ;-))

Where do you see yourself and the project in the next five years?
We want to keep improving the process so users can move through it faster and with less friction. Beyond that, we hope to support BARMER in expanding the platform — bringing in additional options and services — so it can grow into a broader digital health resource for its members.
